“Deficient” U.S. 17 bridge is receiving major renovations

Tidewater Trail (U.S. Route 17) runs parallel to the Dragon Swamp from near Tappahannock to Saluda, where the highway crosses Dragon Run. Since 1957, southbound traffic has crossed the stream on a concrete bridge that is being rebuilt for the first time in its 63 years.       

About 11,000 vehicles a day use the bridge mostly without a second thought — until May 2020, when Virginia Department of Transportation crews reduced the dual lanes to a single lane and set up the work zone. The bridge rehabilitation is expected to take until August 2021, said Kelly Hannon, communications manager for VDOT’s Fredericksburg District.
