Applications for concealed guns are on the rise

The number of  concealed handgun permits issued by Virginia circuit courts has increased 39% through the first six months of 2020, according to court caseload statistics.

In Middlesex County, the number of permits commonly called “concealed carry,” increased 34% through June 30.

Neighboring counties have shown an increase in concealed handgun permits this year with King William at 92%, one of the largest increases in Virginia. Other gun permit increases in nearby counties include King and Queen, 82%; Northumberland, 69%; Gloucester, 60%; New Kent, 45%; Mathews, 36%; and Lancaster, 11%.

The number of permits issued in Middlesex County to carry a concealed firearm in 2020 is on track to eclipse the total number of permits issued in 2019 or 2018, according to state data.

As of July 31, the Middlesex court has issued 222 “concealed carry” permits this year…
