Our local community, state and nation are a long way from getting back to normal, but at least there appears to be less panic in general. There are still protests and riots, but they are fewer.
COVID-19 has not left, but we are learning to cope with shutdowns and social distancing. It feels as if we are beginning to settle in to our new normal whatever that ends up becoming. In many ways it would not be good if we did return to normal.
For a majority of Americans, the old normal was quite comfortable, but for many the old normal left a lot to be desired. Racism, classism and sexism are real and COVID-19 is not a hoax. Hopefully we can create a new normal that is better for everyone or at least better for more Americans than the old normal was.
Consider the experiences of Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Ruth and Naomi, Isaiah, Mary and Joseph, Peter and Paul. Each of their lives was disrupted and for each of them the only path was forward. Consider how often the children of Israel wanted to return to their normal – slavery!
Returning to normal feels safe, because it is what we know and we are afraid of what we don’t know. Crisis is God’s mechanism to jar us out of unhealthy homeostasis.
Blessings, Pastor John.
