Athletic seasons to commence Dec. 14

High school athletic fields and courts across the commonwealth will be dormant this fall.
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) executive committee voted 34-1 during a special session Monday, July 27, to delay the start of all sports and activities until Dec. 14. The committee had three models to consider in reopening sports for the 2020-2021 school year and adopted Model 3 with a condensed interscholastic plan.
The approved Model 3 will allow traditional winter sports, basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swim/dive and wrestling to begin practice Dec. 14 with the first contest on Dec. 28. The season will continue through Feb. 20, 2021.
Fall sports, including football, cross country, field hockey, golf, volleyball and cheering, will begin practice Feb. 15, 2021 and their seasons will extend through May 1, 2021. The first contest date would be March 1, 2021.
Spring sports, including baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, lacrosse and track and field would be in season April 12, 2021 through June 26, 2021 with the first contest date on April 26, 2021.
