Delayed by COVID-19, MHS seniors finally get commencement

by Tom Chillemi –
The Middlesex High School Class of 2020 graduation on Saturday was unlike any other in the 71-year history of the school.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, MHS’s conventional commencement, originally set for June 6, was postponed. On July 25, five smaller graduation ceremonies were conducted, with the 87 candidates for graduation divided into groups of no more than 20 so that social distancing protocol could be adhered to.
To the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance,” the students took photos and shot videos as the students walked, one at a time, down the center of the gym floor where so much had happened in their four years at MHS.
The candidates for graduation took their places in chairs spaced well apart and were welcomed by MHS Principal Susan Fleet.
In her brief remarks Fleet delivered a hopeful message to the graduates and invited guests.
Fleet then called the formal names of each graduate, who then picked up their diploma from a table and posed on stage for an official photo — their last photo as a MHS student.
Dr. Gretz then pronounced them graduates and they moved their tassel from the right side of their cap to the left.
