Nearly 4,000 Middlesex County locations lost power multiple times Tuesday after a vehicle knocked down a power pole along General Puller Highway (Route 33) near the entrance to Christchurch School a little after 2 p.m. The vehicle ran off the northbound lane, struck a fence and caused a power pole to snap. Authorities did not immediately have the driver’s name, nor were they sure why the driver went off the roadway.

As the pole fell, it tore down power lines running across Route 33, which in turn pulled down a pole on the opposite side of the highway, causing a transformer to break loose from the pole.

After the crash, 3,981 Dominon customer locations lost power, according to a Dominion spokesman. The outages ranged from Jamaica south to Hartfield, according to the company’s website.

Workers were able to reroute power and get most customers reconnected by late afternoon. However, power went out again in the evening while crews replaced the transformer and did other tasks. Power was restored later that evening.
