Laurel Farms shooting ban eyed

Use of explosive targets there raises concerns, but supervisors table issue until Aug. meeting

Saluda District Supervisor Pete Mansfield requested at the board of supervisors regular monthly meeting Tuesday that the board consider an ordinance to prohibit outdoor shooting of firearms in the Laurel Farms subdivision near Urbanna.

Mansfield wants the board to consider a similar ordinance approved 14 years ago by a previous board that prohibits outdoor shooting of firearms in the Piankatank Shores subdivision near Hartfield.

Mansfield said citizens from Laurel Farms subdivision voiced concern recently that Tannerite target explosions were creating high noise levels and unsafe living conditions.

Tannerite is a brand of “binary explosive” target used with high velocity bullets in long-range firearm practice. Mansfield said “Tannerite is a mixture of a half pound of ammonium perchlorate and oxidizing aluminum powder that can only be triggered from a high powered weapon with a muzzle velocity of at least 2000 feet per second.”

The land owner “has no respect for his neighbor’s right to safety, peace and tranquility, which demands action from our board,” said Mansfield.

He also stated the landowner lives on a 1.68 acre lot…
