Celebrate citizenship – in U.S. as well as in Kingdom of God

This weekend, we will celebrate the 244th anniversary of the founding of our nation. Independence Day is a celebration of our American citizenship, while at the same time, we honor those who made sacrifices to provide our freedoms. But, no matter where you live right now, if you believe in Jesus, then you and I are fellow citizens in the Kingdom of God.

In Matthew 22, the religious leaders asked Jesus whether or not it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. And Jesus’ reply was that, right now, we have to pay money for the services and benefits that we receive. But, He also said, “Render unto God that which is God’s,” indicating that we are also citizens of Heaven. And the latter citizenship requests that we pledge our primary obedience and commitment to the King of that other Kingdom, to which we are citizens.
