Donate at Urbanna Market Saturday to help Middlesex dogs and cats

“Little Miss Spat” Madison Cole, Oyster Queen contestant Madeline Hurd and pooch Sophie, a Middlesex County Animal Shelter alumna, will be at Urbanna Market for their “Homeward Bound” project, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, June 27, collecting donations of food, toys and money to benefit the cats and dogs under the care of the shelter. Fireworks are beautiful to watch, but remember that your animals are not as thrilled by the spectacle as you might be. A few years ago a trembling, sopping wet dog showed up on our property. It had obviously swum across the river to escape the booms of the fireworks. Since she had no identification and shelters and vet offices were closed for the holiday we had to wait until Monday to search for her family.

Luckily, she was reunited with them. Sure enough, they explained she had been outside, was frightened by the noise, and ran off — or swam off. If you have animals outside, please be sure to place ID tags on them. If you are a visitor, be sure to have your local contact information on the tag.  Better yet, keep them safely inside.

Fortunately, Madeline Hurd has taken on a fundraiser to benefit Pet Friends as her Oyster Queen project. Her “little spat” partner is Madison Cole. This past Saturday they were at Hurd’s Hardware store in Deltaville and this coming Saturday, June 27, they will be at the Urbanna Market from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The grocery store is at 335 Virginia St. in Urbanna. The girls are collecting donations of dog and cat food and toys. Monetary donations are always welcomed. Look for the Pet Friends banner and stop by and help make her project a success.

If you would be willing to help by fostering or if you are interested in adopting please call 804-695-7772 and speak to Ruth Williams. Our adoptable animals can be found on Petfinders Middlesex County and Middlesex Pet Friends Facebook.
