William Brill described as most famed sports writer in Middlesex Co. history

Christchurch School has produced some famous writers in the likes of William Styron, Vincent Canby and Lewis Puller Jr. Styron and Puller were winners of the Pulitzer Prize and Canby became “chief film critic” for the New York Times from 1969 until the early 1990s.

Puller attended Urbanna Elementary School along with William “Bill” Brill, who also graduated from Christchurch School and went on to become the most famous sports writer in Middlesex County history.

Son of the late Kate and Dick Brill, Bill was born in Philadelphia and moved with his family as a child to Locust Hill in 1938. Brill graduated in 1948 from Christchurch, just two miles from the family homeplace.

He was named to four Halls of Fame — the United States Basketball Writers Association Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, and Christchurch School Hall of Fame in 2007. He was voted…
