Wake Ramp Cleared

Hartfield representative on the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors John Koontz checks the water’s depth Saturday at Mill Creek boat ramp in Wake. Site reopens after being clogged with sand for nearly two years

The boat ramp at Mill Creek Landing in Wake was dredged of 1,800 cubic yards of sand last week and is officially open to boaters to launch and haul their boats to and from the water.

The Rappahannock River boat ramp has been closed for nearly two years as tons of sand blocked the entrance on the waterside of the ramp keeping boaters from being able to use the facility.

There had been little hope of reopening as the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), charged with maintenance of the facility, said funding was not available to do the job right.

VDGIF officials dredged sand from the ramp a few years ago and it quickly silted in.

Hartfield supervisor representative John Koontz took it upon himself to temporarily solve the problem. Koontz and county attorney Heather Lewis negotiated a “Memorandum of Understanding” with Virginia’s Office of Attorney General, Mark Herring, to allow the county to dredge sand from the ramp.
