The Middlesex County Sports Complex at Locust Hill is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The journey that led to the opening of the complex in 1997 took vision, generosity, dedication and determination from many citizens of Middlesex.
The journey officially started in November 1993 when a group of citizens went before the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors and received permission to develop 16 acres of county-owned land adjacent to St. Clare Walker Middle School in Locust Hill to build a sports complex.
In the April 27, 1995 story in Southside Sentinel on “breaking ground” at the sports complex, the late Buddy Moore named some of the individuals and companies who kicked in early on the county’s portion of in-kind work. “All of the design work was done at no cost by (the late) Donald Caskie of Urbanna,” it stated. “The survey work was done at no cost by Gordon Jones, (then) of Dawson, Phillips and Jones of Gloucester and Bobby Wilson and James Williams.” Jones is now owner of Bay Design Group Inc. in Urbanna.
