County seeks status change for airport in Middlesex Co.

Hummel Field airport is at a crossroads.Â
A proposal has been made that could be the beginning of building a runway that is longer, wider and safer. The runway would be re-aligned and angled slightly to the east so that planes will not have to fly over houses.   Â
The proposal has been submitted to the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (BOS) by Oscar Barber of Topping, president of Delaware Corporation (DelCorp). Barber, 78, has been a pilot for 57 years.
DelCorp’s proposal assumes the total cost of improvements to be $1.3 million, with the Virginia Department of Aviation funding 70%, and DelCorp funding 30%, about $390,000.Â
