Soccer is a big part of MC Sports Complex

The 1982 youth soccer program was the forerunner of today’s very popular Middlesex YMCA soccer program and is played at the Middlesex County Sports Complex at Locust Hill. The Middlesex Family YMCA soccer program started in 1982 as the Tidewater Summer Soccer League Fall Youth Program with about 50 youngsters. Youth soccer has grown over the last 38 years to where there are more than 300 children playing YMCA soccer in the spring and fall on fields at the complex in Locust Hill. (Sentinel file photo)

The Middlesex County Sports Complex at Locust Hill is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and since opening it has been home to the Middlesex Soccer League program and today the Middlesex Family YMCA Soccer Program.

When officials broke ground on the sports complex in summer 1995 the county’s youth soccer league was in transition. Since the startup of the league in 1982, youth soccer had been played on Christchurch School’s athletic fields. However, with the large growth in the soccer program, school officials at Christchurch were suggesting a location with more parking and field space.

By 1990 many soccer parents of children involved in the creation of the startup of youth soccer in Middlesex had aged out of the league. The program was in desperate need of volunteers and new leadership.
