Nellie Fields of Saluda has sewn all of her life. She used to make clothes for herself and her children. “Back in those days you had to do it,” she said.
Her words ring true these days. With respiratory masks in short supply due to the COVID-19 crisis, Fields has sewn more than 350 masks to help slow the spread of the disease.
Fields joined the sewing ministry of Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) of Urbanna Baptist Church, which since early March has been making masks for hospitals, correction centers, health departments, doctor offices, surgical centers and area convalescent centers in addition to family, friends and church members.
To date, the Middlesex County team members have created more than 1,200 masks, and they’re still sewing. “It is quite a humbling experience…
