Deborah Figg makes, gives out hundreds of COVID-19 battling masks

Wearing a face mask is highly recommended by health officials as a defense against the spread of COVID-19. With a shortage of masks, Deborah Figg of Wake has used her sewing skills to make more than 750 masks in almost a month. She has given them away and in doing so has made many people feel more secure and perhaps slowed the spread of the coronavirus. The virus is spread by moisture droplets expelled from the nose and mouth of an infected person.
Figg has gifted the masks to family, friends, friends of friends, local grocery stores, local hardware stores, local doctors offices, postal workers, teachers, cooks at county schools and many other local businesses.
“My dad always said that we all have talents and we should do whatever we can to help others,” said Figg. “Isolation has been different, hard at times, but having this to focus on has helped me pass many hours.”
