James Thomas Ferguson

James Thomas Ferguson, 64, a retired U.S. Coast Guard boatswain’s mate chief petty officer, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on April 9, 2020.

The son of Thomas and Arlis Ferguson, Jim Ferguson was raised in Xenia, Ohio, and enlisted in the Coast Guard shortly after graduating high school. He served honorably for 21 years, retiring from his last duty station in Mathews in 1995. He was a skilled craftsman and applied his gift to boat making and repair in the Northern Neck area for most of his time after retirement.

He was always quick to make friends with those he met and made an extra effort to treat those around him like family. Some of his greatest enjoyments in life were hunting, fishing and spending time with those whom he loved.

He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Ferguson; and son, Nick Ferguson. He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Hudgins Ferguson; children, Jeremiah Ferguson, Tony Ferguson (Jennifer), Amy Ferguson, Tom Jarvis (Amy), David Jarvis, Rebecca Mahoney (Tom); mother, Arlis Ferguson; brother, Tim Ferguson (Rhonda); and sister, Tammy Billows (Geoff). He also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren, Andrea, Chris, Tommy, Ashton, Mira, Peyton, Stephen, John Luke, Nick, Ashley, Hailey, Charlotte, Jacob, Ben and Alice; and numerous others that he dearly loved.

A memorial service is planned for a later date. Cards or letters can be sent to P.O. Box 347, Topping, VA 23169. Flowers can be sent to the house at 728 Greys Point Road, Topping, VA 23169. Services are under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
