Restaurant orders vanish as COVID-19 threat advances

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, oyster farmers in Virginia lost 95-100% of their business last month when restaurants and other customers canceled their orders.

Topping-based Rappahannock Oyster Company (ROC) lost 95% of its orders this past month and its owners are working quickly to apply for assistance. 

“This severely impacted our company, our business partners, and our oyster farming production process,” said ROC Co-owner Ryan Croxton. “We are seeing that this has a domino effect and we’re looking at all the ways we can keep things running.” 

The three-inch oysters that are ready for delivery now will stay in the water and result in a surplus of 4-5 inch oysters down the road. Croxton said restaurants…
