Mildred Lee Shackleford, 78, of Richmond, formerly of Urbanna, passed away on February 13, 2020 at Sunrise Assisted Living.
She was born December 23, 1941 in Richmond, a daughter of the late Aubrey and Ruth Marshall Wilkes. Mildred was preceded in death by her loving husband of 33 years, R. Stanley Shackleford; and her brothers-in-law, Walter Rosypal, Horace Shackleford and Earl Shackleford.
She is survived by her sister, Lou Rosypal; brother-in-law, George Shackleford; sister-in-law, Virginia Hogge; nieces, Manya Saunders (Scott), and Alexa von Dohlen (Joe); and three great-nephews, Charles, Alex, and Hunter Saunders.
Mildred graduated from Middlesex High School and attended Louisburg College. She then went on to work as a nurse for Mizpah Health Care Center in Locust Hill for over 30 years and loved taking care of people. In her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the Second Time Around Thrift Shop in Urbanna. She also was a lifetime member of Urbanna United Methodist Church.
Mildred was an animal lover in every sense. She had a proud succession of dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and even a few raccoons and opossums throughout her life. She fed neighbors’ pets, strays, any creature that passed through her yard, and was never without a dog bone in her pocket.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living for its compassion and care these last three years.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 22, in Faulkner Funeral Homes, Bristow-Faulkner Chapel, Saluda. Interment will be in Middlesex Memorial Cemetery, Urbanna.
Memorial gifts can be made to the Gloucester/Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061.
