There is inequality in some school systems with regard to gifted education opportunities for black children, said Dr. Joy Lawson Davis, keynote speaker at the 15th Annual Middlesex NAACP Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on January 20.
“Dr. King would be appalled to know that in our schools today black children are most at risk of being expelled, suspended or inappropriately placed in special education.”
Dr. Davis, an educator with over 30 years of experience including 12 years in the King and Queen County School System, holds a doctorate in gifted education from the College of William and Mary. She also served as the Virginia State Specialist for K-12 gifted services for five years.
