Christchurch seniors visit Fort Monroe

Place-Based Extensions of the Academic Classroom (PEAC) are an important component of Christchurch School’s college-prep curriculum. Exploration in the watershed, hands-on projects, and creative, outside-the-box thinking ensure that lessons take hold and students make important intellectual connections. Classes take PEACs throughout the school year. 

Last week the CCS senior class spent the day at Fort Monroe at the southern tip of the Virginia Peninsula, at Old Point Comfort in Hampton, where the James River and the Chesapeake Bay converge. There, they discussed the contrasting convictions of significant leaders who shaped American history in the very place where they stood these many years later, including Chief Powhatan, Capt. John Smith, the first African slaves to step foot in Virginia and the U.S., Edgar Allan Poe, Chief Black Hawk, President Lincoln, General Butler, McClellan, Lee, Jefferson Davis, Harriet Tubman, The United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Governor Northam.
