Veteran musicians to share unique musical tradition

“A Celebration of the Hammond Organ: An Afternoon of Sacred Organ Music” will be held Sunday, December 15, at 3 p.m. at Angel Visit Baptist Church, 29566 Tidewater Trail, Dunnsville. Milton L. Beale and Rev. Dr. John E. Nickens will share their fascination with this unique instrument and demonstrate its influence on the African-American worship experience. Both Beale and Nickens are veteran musicians who are widely recognized locally and regionally, each having played the organ for more than half a century. However, their paths to the organ are divergent.

Whereas the Hammond Organ was once standard fare in African-American churches, many contemporary church musicians play electronic keyboards instead. It is a bit of a rarity to have the opportunity to hear the grand sounds of the Hammond Organ. Please plan to attend this unique performance. It is free and open to the public.
