A vision of a trail through Middlesex County showing drivers many barn quilts representing our county’s various sectors is becoming a reality! So far, there are six barn quilts to see. A barn quilt is a painted representation of a quilt block displayed on a building, fence or sign post.
There is a barn quilt of a donkey on Canoe House Road, of a compass rose on Route 3 in Topping, of a sunflower in Hartfield, a mariner’s compass on Route 33 in Deltaville, and one commemorating the Wright Skiff-Family Boat Building Week at the Deltaville Maritime Museum. Soon, a large beaming sun barn quilt will be up on a tall building at a marina on Route 33 in Deltaville.
“It would be terrific to have additional barn quilts on display along the main arteries of our county—Route 17, Route 33 and Route 3—as well as smaller, well-traveled roads in this county,” said a project spokesperson.
Once there are at least 10 barn quilts placed, a brochure will be produced to lead drivers to the various displays through Middlesex County. These brochures will be available at county visitor centers and on a website, which could be printed.
A small group of volunteers have a workshop where they create these barn quilts. The reasonable cost of these art works is to cover the cost of materials. If there is any money left over, it is donated to the Deltaville Maritime Museum—the sponsor of this county endeavor.
