M&M Building Supply earns national industry recognition

Paying homage to their local community with the opening of their third location has earned M&M Building Supply national recognition from a leading home improvement industry publication.

The Hardware Connection,” a national digital magazine covering the independent retail hardware industry, profiled M&M Building Supply as the cover story on its November issue

The feature chronicles the journey of the husband and wife team of Sterling Hudgins and Kathryn Tatterson as they opened their new store in Mathews. A shining example of store owners looking to build something new in an existing space, the pair transformed an old grocery store into a modern, fully-stocked home center.

The final design of the 11,000-square-foot store features new floors, lighting, and fixtures along with a custom-built front counter fashioned to look like the stern of a Chesapeake Bay deadrise workboat, the official state boat of Virginia. Additional local decor has been incorporated throughout, including old photos of local fishermen and a historic lighthouse. The pair’s dedication to their community and desire to honor their roots has resulted in great success.

“One woman came in and started to cry, because her grandfather was in a picture on the wall from the early 1980s while mending fishing nets,” said Tatterson. “One man from that photo still comes into the store. He’s part of the Port Haywood Coffee Club, who are all retired boat captains.”

The husband and wife duo has also been highlighted by Do it Best Corp., their co-op partner, with a dedicated feature in their 2019 Annual Report.

M&M Building Supply operates three locations, including Hartfield, Port Haywood and the new store in Mathews.
