Ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrates new Bay Transit bus shelters at RCC campuses

Bay Transit, a division of Bay Aging, and Rappahannock Community College (RCC) held concurrently running-ribbon cutting ceremonies at the RCC’s Warsaw and Glenns campuses on Wednesday, November 6, to celebrate the installation of new Bay Transit bus shelters at the community college’s two main campuses.

Dr. Kennedy welcomed the new bus shelters as a valuable service for RCC students, faculty and staff. “Last year more than 2,200 rides on Bay Transit originated from, or were destined to, RCC’s campuses in Warsaw, Glenns and Kilmarnock. We are excited to have the new shelters in place so that students, faculty and staff waiting on the bus are protected from the elements. We recognize how important access to education is for the economic development of our region.”

Dr. Kennedy also announced a partnership with Bay Transit that demonstrated RCC’s commitment to making their campuses more accessible than ever before. “One of the barriers for our students is transportation. We’ve done a recent survey of students and over 11% said they’ve had to miss a class because of lack of transportation. These challenges are the things that you don’t think about. You think about students being academically prepared, but it’s all these other things about life that impact our students. We’ve recently opened a food pantry, and this is the next logical step for us. We are very proud to have this shelter here for students where we can raise awareness that transportation is a service that can be offered. I am very pleased to announce that beginning in January, our RCC Educational Foundation has decided that they will subsidize all rides for our students.  There will be no cost to students who ride to and from RCC campuses on Bay Transit.”
