A Veterans Day celebration will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 11, on the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse Lawn at the intersection of Route 17 Business and Route 33 in Saluda.
The program is sponsored by American Legion Post 82, American Legion Post 241, and the citizens of Middlesex County. The public is invited.
The guest speaker will be Captain Pat Roane who served 30 years in the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare officer. During assignments in six warships, he visited over 35 different countries around the world, completing deployments in the Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, South Atlantic Ocean, and Western Pacific Ocean. Captain Roane commanded “USS Curtis Wilbur,” a guided missile destroyer in Yokosuka, Japan, and “USS Lake Champlain,” a guided missile cruiser in San Diego.
Captain Roane earned a bachelor of science degree in marine engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981. Graduate studies include a master of arts degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College, and a master of science degree in engineering science from the Naval Postgraduate School. While in the Navy, he was designated as a combat systems engineering sub-specialist.
Captain Roane resides in Mathews County with his wife Elizabeth; they enjoy life on their horse farm along the Piankatank River.
