Trip to Tangier Island

For their annual Fall Immersion Trip, the Christchurch School juniors headed into the Chesapeake Bay to explore Tangier Island and Port Isobel. Preceding the trip, the class studied the history of the island. Throughout the three-day trip, students and faculty investigated the economy, environment, and social realities of the island. They visited with families, interviewed townspeople, and spent time with the watermen. They studied the biodiversity of the island, and conducted chemical tests of the water. Once back at school, they will use the data and anecdotal evidence they gathered to grapple with the questions: How sustainable is the community on Tangier Island? Are there different options regarding the health of the community? What recommendations could be made with regard to the sustainability of Tangier? Above, the students interview the people of Tangier.
