Raymond W. Burrell Sr. was born on May 9, 1919 to Molegold and Annabell Burrell. He departed this life on October 12, 2019 at VHS Walter Reed Convalescent & Rehabilitation, Gloucester.
At an early age, he joined First Baptist Church Amburg and remained a devoted member. He graduated from Middlesex Public Schools. He was a WWII veteran. His military unit under General George S. Patton was known as the 761st Tank Battalion called the “Black Panthers.” Raymond was employed at the Newport News Shipyard and Drydock Company as a sheet metal fabricator until his retirement.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Molegold and Annabell Burrell; wife, Clarice Hackett Burrell; son, Raymond W. Burrell Jr.; brothers, Chester and Thomas Burrell; sisters, Naomi Banks, Elaine Boyd, Janice Smith and Annabell Marcella Harris; brothers-in-law, Robert Banks, Linwood Smith and David Harris; and nieces, Mary and Cecelia Harris.
Raymond leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Leanna C. Burrell, and son, Robert L. Burrell, of Hardyville; four nieces, Joan Opie of Topping, Darlene Roye of Baltimore, Md., Sharon Harris of Rocky Mount, N.C, and Tyree Harris of Newport News; two nephews, Stephen Harris and David Harris Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
The viewing will be on Friday, October 18, from 6-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Amburg.
The funeral service will be on Saturday, October 19, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Amburg.
