The Middlesex High School varsity football team (5-2) suffered its second loss of the season 42-7 Friday night against West Point at the Pointers’ annual homecoming game.

From the beginning, the Chargers had trouble stopping the running game of West Point. Throughout the game, the Pointers’ big fullback, Zach Gonzalez, and halfback, Steven Whittaker, ran through Charger defenders to score five touchdowns—three for Gonzalez and two for Whittaker.

Middlesex came alive in the second quarter defensively and, along with Pointer penalties, slowed down the West Point momentum.

The second half was all West Point. Gonzalez scored with 6:10 left in the third quarter on a 4-yard run.

West Point had 328 yards of total offense—all on the ground. Middlesex had 129 yards of offense with 118 yards coming from the air. The Chargers had a total of 38 yards rushing.

This week the Chargers do not play and there will be no game on Friday, Oct. 18. The Chargers will host the Atlantic Shores Christian Seahawks from Chesapeake on Friday, October 25, at the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex at MHS in Saluda. The game will start at 7 p.m.
