Seniors Jaylen Wood (Richmond) and Kobe Scales (Gloucester) carried the Christchurch School Seahorse offense to a 24-20 victory in their first game of the 2019 season.

Christchurch led the game 17-7 going into the second half, but the Saints pulled in front in the third quarter by scoring twice. Facing a 20-17 deficit in the fourth quarter, the Seahorses went on a 70-yard drive to score and take a four-point lead.

Wood later made a crucial tackle on a fourth down pass completion to seal the deal for Christchurch.

Wood rushed for a TD and passed for a TD. Scales ran over and through the Nansemond Suffolk Academy Saints all afternoon. Junior Rock Wolfson (Kilmarnock) provided the game winning touchdown reception and numerous tackles to help the cause, while junior OL, DL, K Jack Barker (Accomack) provided the perfect day with his foot. Barker was 3 for 3 on PAT kicks and tallied the first points of the season with a 32-yard field goal on the Seahorses’ first drive. Junior Brandan Bowers (Newport News) scored on a two-yard plunge in the second quarter.

After struggling through a rebuilding 2018 campaign, the season ahead looks solid for CCS. Senior linemen Blake Ryder (Hampton), Barron Cohen (Fredericksburg), Elia Fontecchio (Jacksonville, NC), and Caleb Fernander (Nassau, BA) have established that the Seahorses will be strong on the front lines.

The first game was sprinkled with errors on both sides of the ball but coach Ed Homer said he was excited to see the Seahorses return to their brand of hard-hitting football.

The Seahorses travel to Front Royal this weekend to face the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon Academy.
