The Middlesex High School varsity volleyball team improved to 2-1 with wins over Lancaster and Northumberland in recent action.
On August 29, Middlesex defeated visiting Lancaster 3-1 in four sets. The Lady Chargers won game one in overtime 26-24. The Lady Red Devils won game two 25-19. Middlesex rallied to win 25-13 and 25-17 to take the match.
“We played well but still committed too many unforced errors against a pretty good team,” said Lady Charger coach Brian Walton.
Lady Charger Laura Walton led the way with 16 kills, 1 ace, 21 assists, and 7 digs. Airiana Beverley had another great night with 15 kills and 2 digs. Ellie McMinn had 7 kills and 2 aces. Elizabeth Ketner served at 94.7% and had 16 digs. Ella Hodges had 2 kills.
“The girls are starting to gel together,” said Coach Walton.
On September 3, Mid-dlesex defeated visiting Northumberland in three games, 25-17, 25-7 and 25-23.
Northumberland threatened in game three going up 17-14 before Middlesex got back on track. Down the stretch the score was tied at 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22 before Middlesex secured the win at 25-23 to avoid overtime.
Beverley had 13 kills, Walton had 9 kills and 7 aces, Hodges had 7 blocks and 3 kills, McMinn had 5 kills, and Ketner had 9 digs and 3 aces.
Middlesex (2-1) lost to Rappahannock in five games on August 26.
The varsity and JV volleyball teams are home against W&L on Thursday, September 5, and travel to King William on Tuesday, September 10. On Wednesday, September 11, they host Lancaster and on Thursday, September 12, they host Carver. The JV plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity plays at 7 p.m.
