‘Josh Walker Trio’ headlines maritime park concert Saturday

Josh Walker

by Bill Powell
Events Director: Deltaville Maritime Museum

It’s Labor Day Weekend and time for our annual bonus Groovin’ in the Park on the Waterfront Stage at Deltaville Maritime Museum from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, August 31. This is our annual visit from the Josh Walker Trio and songstress Sharon Rae North bringing their smooth as silk renditions of our favorite old standards and popular jazz tunes . . . “Fly me to the Moon,” “My Way” . . . all our faves.

Josh is an internationally-known musician with strong Middlesex ties. Gates will open at 4 p.m. The “Toby Gillie Duo” will open from 5-6 p.m. and Josh will follow from 6-8 p.m. This is a bring your own lawn chair and cooler concert.

The 2019 Groovin’ season is sponsored by our local Sonabanks.

Josh Walker has performed internationally as far away as Japan. He is a multiple-award jazz guitarist who has played at both the Montreal and Toronto jazz festivals! He composes, plays in multiple groups and he has recently become the professor of Jazz Guitar at Shepherd University. Josh will have his original CD, “Inertia,” available at the concert. For all things Josh, check out www.joshuawalker.net.

In addition to Josh Walker, the trio includes stand-up bassist Karine Chapdelaine, jazz drummer extraordinaire Kevin Gaines and the vocal artistry of Sharon Rae North. This is a “don’t miss” for jazz and easy listening enthusiasts. Whether you are a fan of old standards, classic or modern jazz, this Saturday’s Groovin’ in the Park is the music event for you.

As for Sharon Rae, check out her website at www.sharonraenorth.com. As Jay Edwards, host of Jazz Tones, WCLK, Atlanta, says, “Line up all of the female jazz vocalists you can think of and Sharon Rae North can sing them all under the table (see related story on  page A6).

The unpredictable and fun duo of Toby Gillie and Dan Grantham will open for Josh and Sharon Rae. Tuba and guitar, who’d a thunk it!

What could be a better fit into your enjoyment of this last long weekend of summer with friends and family than to, when you’ve finished with your daytime activities, grab your lawn chairs and come on out to the Waterfront Park for the bonus Groovin’ concert on our waterfront Saturday evening, August 31. Some chairs are available if you can’t bring yours.

Marty will be handling the food for this concert. He will be bringing his flavored swine skins, Nathan’s hot dogs and funnel cakes. The Bistrobunch will have the full bloody Mary-mimosa bar and bottled water ready.

Advance tickets are $10 per person and available at the museum office, during open hours, and at Nauti Nell’s in Deltaville. Tickets at the door are $15 per person. Children under 12 are free.

Groovin’ will happen, rain or shine. In case of rain, the performance will be in the new Events Pavilion.

There is plenty of parking in the park’s spacious lots and concert-goers are encouraged to drive through and drop off their passengers and gear before parking.

Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park, a volunteer, non-profit organization, is in Deltaville at 287 Jackson Creek Road, and by water on Mill Creek. To get to the museum and park, follow Route 33 (General Puller Hwy.) through Deltaville and turn right across from the Citgo service station onto Route 660 (Jackson Creek Rd.).
