Summer reading program holds grand finale

“It’s Showtime at Your Library,” the Middlesex County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, had its grand finale on August 7 at the Urbanna Library. The top readers are pictured above with Kiwanis Club members who provided popcorn for the children. They are, front row from left, Carson Longest and Claire Longest; second row, Nadya Crader, Lucas Longest and Max Bauer; third row, Claire Dise and Julia Dise; and back row, Phil Brown, Nancy Fisk, Don Richwine and Bob Winslow.

This summer children have been busy reading for the Middlesex County Public Library’s summer reading program, “It’s Showtime at Your Library.” Wednesday, August 7, was the grand finale for all the children from PreK through rising fifth grade.

The Kiwanis Club provided freshly popped corn from their old-time popcorn machine. Children then enjoyed a movie “Fish is Fish” based on the book from Leo Lionni.

After the movie all children received bags with a bookmark, eraser, pencil and stickers and chose a book to take home and keep.

The top winners in each age group were announced. In the PreK-rising 1st grade, the winners were: first place, Noah Rose, 366 books; second place, tie between Claire and Carson Longest; and third place, Max Bauer.

In Rising 2nd-3rd grade, the winners were: first place, Nadya Crader, 269 books; second place, tie between Claire Dise and Carrisa Maul; and third place, Lucas Longest.

In the rising 4th and 5th grades, the winners were: first place, Veronica Wells, 45.5 hours; second place, Laura Smallwood; and third place, Julia Dise.

All received a book of their choice and summer reading t-shirt. This year children read a total of 2,191 books and 94 hours.

Next year’s theme is: “Dig Deeper: Read, Investigate, Discover.”
