A pickup truck struck a riding lawnmower from behind on westbound Route 33, just east of Route 620 near St. Clare Walker Middle School at Locust Hill, on Thursday, November 10, at 12:33 p.m., reported First Sergeant Kevin Barrick of the Virginia State Police.

The lawnmower, operated by Lewis Richard Griffin, 73, of Topping, was being driven on the paved shoulder of the westbound lane of Route 33 when the crash occurred, said Barrick. Griffin was airlifted from the scene by Life Evac helicopter and transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the 1988 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck, a 44-year-old Saluda woman, was not injured. She was charged with failing to stay within the travel lane.

The crash was investigated by Trooper Troy Smith.
