Rappahannock Concert Association to host ‘Capital Focus Jazz Band’

Capital Focus Jazz Band

The Rappahannock Concert Association (RCA) will present the “Capital Focus Jazz Band” in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the Northumberland County Schools Performing Arts Theater, 201 Academic Lane, Heathsville.

The Capital Focus Jazz Band, the Youth Learning Program of the Potomac River Jazz Club, was formed to continue the legacy of such giants of American music as Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. Since 1988, this nationally acclaimed program has provided promising young musicians with a grounding in the fundamentals of jazz, as well as specialized training in the traditional New Orleans styles and their offshoots.

The band has performed at receptions for the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, and many other dignitaries.  Performance venues have included the White House, Capitol, Kennedy Center, Bourbon Street and Preservation Hall (New Orleans), and jazz clubs in New York and Europe. It has participated in jazz festivals in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean. The band was also featured in a live performance on NBC’s “Today Show,” and won a special judges’ prize, placing ahead of several adult bands, at the Louis Armstrong International Jazz Competition in France.

The current members of the band include high school, undergraduate and graduate college students who have received many awards for their musical expertise and talent.

Adult concert tickets are $25 each. Group rates are available. Students are always admitted free. Purchase tickets at, call the box office at 888-210-8006, or pay at the door.
