Mother’s Day event, planned at Belle Isle Saturday

Bill and Pam Gurley

Belle Isle State Park at Somers in Lancaster County has several activities planned for Saturday, May 11. All activities take place at the picnic area unless otherwise noted.

Begin the day making a bird feeder with park ranger David Beck for a Mother’s Day present. The cost is $2 per bird feeder and takes place at 10 a.m.

From 3-5 p.m. Master Naturalists and Audubon Society members will be on hand for a free festival about birds. Noted local birder Frank Schaff will lead a bird-watching hike beginning at the Equestrian Park lot at 3 p.m.

The picnic area will be the site of a giant board game in which players must safely migrate while avoiding dangers. Other activities will let players compare their physical feats with those of birds, see how many sport teams they can identify that are named after birds, learn how birds attract mates, and test knowledge of birds in a Jeop-birdy game.

Bill and Pam Gurley will return to kick off the Music by the River concert series from 6-8 p.m. with a free concert. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket or chairs. There will be games for the kids.

End the day with a free astronomy program at the amphitheater. Park interpreters will tell stories about the women mentioned in the constellations and real women in space.

There is a $3 per car parking fee that day. For information, call the park at 462-5030.
