Finally the sun is shining and the mercury in thermometers is on the upswing. Doors and windows are being flung open and there’s a whole lot of activity going on associated with spring—especially within the boating community.
The Cocktail boat racing event begins at 9 a.m. and will include the participation of the Urbanna club members and up to 50 others from some of the 27 states currently representing the national association, the Cocktail Class Wooden Boat Racing Association. Participants, both men and women, will begin arriving on Friday, May 17, for early check-in and will compete on the race course in the harbor all day on Saturday, May 18.
Throughout the day food and soft drinks will be available. There will be a wine and beer tent on-site for the adults, and souvenirs of the races will be on sale. There will be handicapped parking offered at the marina and general parking will be on the streets.
After the races, “Music Under the Stars,” an annual concert series sponsored by the Urbanna Business Association, will be held at Taber Park where folks can relax, rest easy after a busy day, tap their toes or dance to “Jumbo Lump Daddy and the Back Fin Boys.”
Volunteers to help with the races and contributions to offset the cost of putting on the event are needed. “We would welcome all amounts, large and small,” said race publicist Ginny Sawkins.
