Art deTour, ceramics open house, art yard sale usher in summer at Bay School

Susan Hill of Pepper Creek Pottery, a member of the newly-formed Bay School’s potters guild, will be one of the potters demonstrating on the pottery wheel at the Bay School on Saturday, May 20, as part of the school’s ceramics open house. Visitors are invited to have their own hands-on clay experience in the pottery studio.

This Saturday, May 20, the Bay School Community Arts Center will welcome bicyclists, their families, and visitors to downtown Mathews with enticing artistic experiences. This is the Bay School’s second year hosting Art deTour, an event associated with the Tour de Chesapeake bicycling event held annually in Mathews County.

Under tents on the front patio of the Bay School, guests will find Rita Cutler’s whiskey bottle art and clay pottery made by the Bay Potters’ Guild. They also will find pottery wheel demonstrations and opportunities for hands-on clay experiences during the annual ceramics open house, all day on Saturday. “This is a fun opportunity for families or individuals of all ages to give clay a try,” said Bay School director Pam Doss.

The Art Speaks Gallery will mark the end of its 5th annual Art Speaks on the Bay juried art show with a closing reception on Friday, June 2, from 6-8 p.m. This will be a more casual reception than the opening, with simple snacks, wine and beer, and a chance to visit with exhibiting artists. The show ends on Saturday, June 3, when the gallery closes at 4 p.m. Art Speaks on the Bay is sponsored by Chesapeake Bank and the Tri-River Investment Group of Davenport & Company.

Also on Saturday, June 3, the Bay School will participate in the Mathews County-wide yard sale with an art yard sale on the front patio. Anyone with art-related items to donate can drop them off at the Bay School starting May 24. “We are looking for artwork, frames, art and craft supplies still in usable condition, art books, and the like,” said Doss. Yard sale hours are 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on June 3.

The Bay School will be open late on Thursdays and Fridays for the summer, through Mathews Market Days on September 8-9. The gallery will be open until at least 6 p.m on these evenings.

Teen Open Studio, a free time for teens to create art in the Bay School studios, will continue every Friday from 3-6 p.m. This program is supported in part by the Mathews Community Foundation, which recently awarded the Bay School $3,500 toward outreach programs.

The Bay School, a non-profit community art school and gallery, is at 279 Main Street, Mathews, and is supported in part by Mathews County, Virginia Commission for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Dominion Foundation, Davenport & Company, and Chesapeake Bank.
