Members of the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department of Urbanna fought a chimney fire in a wood-frame house at 218 Urbanna Road on Thursday afternoon.

The home, owned by Carol Cooke, caught fire about 2 p.m. The fire department was called at 2:15 p.m. and arrived at 2:19 p.m.  Upon arrival, smoke was coming out of side windows of the house.

Assistant fire chief Joe Moschetti explains how the blaze was quickly tackled.
Firemen were able to extinguish the fire in about 20 minutes. Assistant fire chief Joe Moschetti reported that the fire was contained to the upstairs of the house.  It started as a chimney fire and spread inside the walls of the second story.

The owner of the home was able to get out of the house and watched from across the road as firemen battled the blaze.

The Upper Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department of Water View also responded to the scene along with the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad of Urbanna.

The house was saved, but many of the contents in the upstairs of the home were either destroyed by fire or damaged by water.
